Infection due to gm +ve, anaerobic & certain gm -ve ie, E. coli, Klebsiella & P. mirabilis; tonsillitis, pharyngitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, lung abscess, emphysema, pleuritis, sinusitis, otitis media, lymphangitis, abscess, cellulitis, ulkus decubitus, mastitis, furunculosis, erysypelas, pyelonephritis, cystitis, adnexitis, endometritis, osteomyelitis, arthritis, septicemia, peritonitis, puerperal sepsis. Not recommended for URTIs & otitis media due to H. influenzae.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Usual dose: 1-2 g daily in 2 divided doses 12 hrly or once daily. Uncomplicated lower UTI (cystitis) 1-2 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Other UTI 2 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Skin & soft tissue infections 1 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Upper & lower resp tract infections: Mild infections 1 g daily in 2 divided doses Moderate to severe infections 1-2 g daily in 2 divided doses. Pharyngitis & tonsillitis due to group A β-hemolytic streptococcus 1 g daily in 2 divided doses for 10 days. Childn 25-50 mg/kg/daily in 2 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ a history of hypersensitivity to penicillin. Discontinue use if any allergic reaction occur, then patients should be treated w/ amine pressor, corticosteroid &/or antihistamine. Patients w/ impaired kidney function (CrCl <50 mL/min/1.73 m2). Patients w/ colitis.
